Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, Piano Department (1919-2019)

This is a history book that tells a century-long history of the Piano Department and the talented people who have studied and taught there, and it’s filled with factual material and emotional attitude. Conceptually, the book is made to resemble stage scenography – it is revealed to the viewer gradually, detail by detail – a little piano leg, wooden lace on its body, and only then the instrument itself.

Hand-drawn strokes are used as a graphic element – an indication of the sensitivity of the music, the unique contribution of each artist involved. And, in a way, this type of approach to the design allows seeing the whole piano industry through a lens of romance, subtleness, lightness.
