The book “Shaping Sounds and Values: Multipart Music as a Means of Social and Cultural Interaction” is a musical research work about polyphonic music and diverse musical practice in different cultures. It is about singing, playing, improvisation, about rhythm and voice. Every participant brings their own unique contribution in the overall sound adventure, and that creates new values.
The graphic design concept is based on a similar idea, only using visual means of expression. Every musician provides their own “brush stroke” in the overall artwork – they can be very different, unexpected, – but together they create a new composition that is very special and unique. The colour palette was chosen to represent each of the 9 traditions that were researched in the book: from Albania, Austria, Bavaria, Borneo, Central Africa, Ghana, Dishi, Java, Morocco, Sardinia, Seto and Northern Latgale. Various techniques and materials were used in the painting process of the design – oil pastels, acrylic paints, pencils, brushes, fingers. The creative team participated in the making of the visual material and it was an improvisation.
